This course teaches practical skills to assist metro, regional and rural practitioners to implement, conduct and evaluate rehabilitation and prevention programs.

The live online course consists of four whole days each devoted to an aspect of cardiac rehabilitation and secondary prevention practice. Experts in the field deliver content live over the four days of the program covering the following broad areas.

·         Foundations of Cardiac Rehabilitation Practice

·         Assessment, Interventions, and Medical Management of Cardiovascular Disease

·         Understanding and Addressing Psychological, Social and Behavioural Issues

·         Interdisciplinary Care of Patients with Cardiovascular Disease

Attendees are also enrolled in the Centre’s self-guided online training on the Cardiac Blues and Supporting Chronic Disease Self-Management, to be completed before the live online training commences. Alongside this, meet the expert, Q and A sessions, as well as networking sessions enable participants to explore additional learning needs and to learn from each other, as well as from session facilitators. This is a unique opportunity to build your expertise in the field of cardiac rehabilitation and secondary prevention. While participants benefit from the live nature of the course, sessions are available for review, for a limited time, after completion of the course, maximise learning. The final session is an interactive group assessment activity designed to assist in consolidation of learning and translation into professional practice.

Foundations of Cardiac Rehabilitation Practice: 6 CPD hours

The first day will cover the evolving evidence for cardiac rehabilitation and how this informs the principles and practice of cardiac rehabilitation. Adaptations of cardiac rehabilitation to the telehealth era are included, along with discussion on maximising program reach and acceptability as well as effective approaches to evaluation and advocacy.  This day covers explicitly the essentials of understanding and addressing the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients. The day concludes with a workshop on enhancing patient engagement, supporting practitioners to address clinician and service factors that impact engagement with programs and services, particularly for hard to reach patients.

Assessment, Interventions, and Medical Management of Cardiovascular Disease: 6 CPD hours

The second day covers all medical aspects of heart disease. This initial session covers anatomy and pathology of heart disease, assisting participants to extend their understanding of this area. The latest evidence in the area of risk factors for heart disease will be covered including traditional and emerging knowledge in this area. The cardiac investigations and interventions are covered in a two hour workshop, including updates on recent developments in this area. The final session on this day is a two hour workshop on cardiac medication, with an emphasis on improving health professional skills to support patients to understand their medications and improve adherence to treatment regimens.

Understanding and Addressing Psychological, Social and Behavioural Issues: 6 CPD hours

The third day includes a patient interview, enabling practitioners to identify and understand the common issues faced by patients after a cardiac event. Workshop content covers depression, anxiety and emotional adjustment as well as understanding the Cardiac Blues. A practical session will enable participants to learn skills to support patients in their emotional adjustment. The day also covers behaviour change challenges and addresses the latest models of behaviour change, alongside training in the skill of motivational interviewing to enable participants to better support patients with advised lifestyle changes. Participants will learn about the importance of identifying and addressing sleep concerns and about simple interventions to support patients experiencing sleep disturbances.

Interdisciplinary Care of Patients with Cardiovascular Disease: 6 CPD hours

The final day of the program brings together experts from allied health to assist practitioners to understand the roles of allied health professionals in the cardiac rehabilitation program. The morning workshop covers the dietitian’s role as well as the latest evidence on nutrition and micronutrient recommendations for patients following a cardiac event. Participants will be exposed to practical strategies to support patient education as well as the latest research in this area. Additionally an intensive workshop on physical activity covering the latest research, and recommendations as well as practical strategies to support adherence will be delivered, and a workshop covering remote assessment and exercise prescription, using a telehealth delivery model. The final session is an interactive group assessment activity designed to assist in consolidation of learning and translation into professional practice.
