<image:title>Heart Health Connect Autumn 2021 - Keeping active in autumn</image:title>
<image:caption>Autumn in Australia is a beautiful time of the year, and a perfect time for being active. The days are slightly cooler and great for getting out-and-about. Being physically active helps with many physical outcomes, such as lowering blood pressure and cholesterol, helping control weight and blood sugars, improving bone health and muscle strength, as well as helping with our emotional wellbeing and social connectedness. We know though that it can be difficult to stay motivated about physical activity. That’s why we have come up with a list of tips to help keep your motivation and enthusiasm high so you can reap the benefits that come with being physically active: Find physical activities that you enjoy. There are so many options from walking, swimming, cycling, weight training, yoga, pilates, sports, dancing, golf, group exercises…the list goes on. You are far more likely to stick with exercise that you enjoy. Vary your physical activities. This will help keep your motivation high and allow your body and mind to experience various benefits. If you can, be active with others (this includes dogs!). This allows us to feel more socially and emotionally connected to others and can help with motivation and maintenance of physical activity. Set achievable goals for your physical activity. If you are just starting out or returning to an activity, start with a comfortable level and build up. If you have been doing it for a while, see if you can increase a little for added benefits. As much as possible, work physical activity into your daily life. For some people this will involve having a routine, others might combine physical activity into their daily lives such as when commuting to work or the shops. This can really help if we are feeling time-poor. If you experience a setback, don’t worry. These things can, and do, happen. Get back to it as soon as you can. Try to break up your sitting time as much as possible. If some of your sedentary activities such as talking on the telephone, using screens or watching TV can be done whilst standing intermittently or lightly moving around, you will be getting many additional health benefits.</image:caption>

<image:title>Heart Health Connect Autumn 2021 - Supporting your emotional wellbeing</image:title>
<image:caption>It is normal to experience changes in mood and emotions after a cardiac event. Some people feel sad and teary. Some feel angry and out of sorts. Some worry about how they can ever get ‘back to normal.’ This emotional rollercoaster has a name: The Cardiac Blues. Common symptoms of Cardiac Blues include: loss of interest in usual activities; withdrawal from friends and family; getting tearful and crying easily; being ‘short tempered’; sleep problems; change in appetite; change in sex drive; confusion and forgetfulness; inability to concentrate; bad dreams and nightmares; worry about another heart event; and thoughts about death. For most people these worries and problems go away in the first few months after the cardiac event. However, common emotional reactions can become a problem for some people and develop into depression. Depression is different from the normal emotions people experience after a cardiac event. People with depression have a profound feeling of sadness most of time and struggle to enjoy things that they have previously enjoyed. There are things you can do to prevent and reduce depression. It is important to maintain physical activity and spend time outdoors. Continue to connect with family and friends. Do things that you enjoy and things that give you a sense of achievement. Remember, it is all about small steps. It is ok to ask for help. Our Cardiac Counselling Clinic provides specialist psychological support for people experiencing difficult emotions after a cardiac event. <image:title>Heart Health Connect Autumn 2021 - Get involved in our research</image:title>
<image:caption>Would you like to be part of the research studies being undertaken by the Centre? We are currently recruiting for our Back on Track trial. Back on Track is an online support program designed to assist heart event survivors in making healthy lifestyle changes, including increasing physical activity, adopting a healthy eating pattern, quitting smoking, and looking after your emotional wellbeing. Back on Track is an ideal program to do while you are waiting to attend cardiac rehab, or even if you are currently attending or have finished cardiac rehab. The Back on Track program includes 5 online modules – you just need a computer and access to the internet. If you join our trial, you will be randomised either to do the online modules alone or to also receive one-on-one telephone support from one of our trained cardiac facilitators. You can find out more about the Back on Track trial through our website. We are also recruiting for our Cardiac Distress Study. This study aims to understand more about the range of emotions that cardiac event survivors experience during their recovery. It is a one-off anonymous questionnaire, and only takes about 15-20 minutes to complete. You can find out more about the Cardiac Distress study through our website. You might also like to share your ‘cardiac survivor’ story for our newsletters which are sent out to our wonderful donors. If you would like to share your story, please contact us on wellbeing@australianhearthealth.org.au and we will make a time to contact you for an interview.</image:caption>

<image:title>Cardiac Connect Autumn 2021 - Supporting your patients’ emotional recovery</image:title>
<image:caption>Acute cardiac events, such as acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABGS), trigger an emotional response for most patients. This emotional response is known as the Cardiac Blues. Common symptoms of the Cardiac Blues include: loss of interest in usual activities; withdrawal from others; getting tearful and crying easily; being ‘short tempered’; sleep problems; change in appetite; change in sex drive; confusion and forgetfulness; inability to concentrate; bad dreams and nightmares; worry about another heart event; and thoughts about death. For most people these worries and problems resolve in the first few months after the cardiac event. However, one in five people go on to develop depression. Our research shows that a history of depression or anxiety, social isolation and financial stress are all risk factors for developing depression after a cardiac event. We know that heart disease confers an increased risk of mental health problems, including anxiety and depression. However, what is less commonly known is that anxiety and depression are risk factors for the development and progression of heart disease. At the Australian Centre for Heart Health we hope to improve awareness of the importance of assessing and treating anxiety and depression in cardiac patients to prevent further events. Our Cardiac Counselling Clinic provides specialist psychological support for those experiencing Cardiac Blues, anxiety and depression after a cardiac event. <image:title>Cardiac Connect Autumn 2021 - Training Update</image:title>
<image:caption>We are very excited to announce that our flagship Cardiac Rehabilitation and Secondary Prevention Training Program is set to return this year after a hiatus in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The training program has been re-modelled for hybrid delivery – so you can attend either in person or stream the program live online. The live program will run over 4 days, with an additional day of online learning prior to attendance at the live program. The live program will run from 8.30am-4pm on 15-18 November at Graduate House in Carlton Victoria. For this year only we are offering the training at the reduced price of $925, which is a discount of 30% off our usual price of $1,400. The course addresses both theoretical and practice aspects of cardiac rehabilitation and secondary prevention programs. It teaches practical skills to assist metropolitan and rural practitioners to implement, conduct and evaluate their rehabilitation and prevention programs. Sessions are delivered by a multi-disciplinary team of expert facilitators including a cardiologist, nurse, physiotherapist, psychologist, dietitian and social worker. The training attracts 30 hours of CPD points. Please email us at training@australianhearthealth.org.au for more information or register online.</image:caption>

<image:title>Cardiac Connect Autumn 2021 - Research Update</image:title>
<image:caption>The Centre is continuing to recruit for our Back on Track trial. Back on Track is an online support program designed to assist cardiac patients in their physical and emotional recovery by offering patients support in making healthy lifestyle changes, including increasing physical activity, adopting a healthy eating pattern, quitting smoking, and looking after one’s emotional wellbeing. With increasing waitlists for cardiac rehabilitation programs across the country due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Back on Track is an ideal program for your patients to do while they are waiting to attend cardiac rehab. The program is designed to complement the support provided through cardiac rehab by providing patients with evidence-based behaviour change strategies to help them in making and sustaining lifestyle changes. You can refer your patients to our Back on Track trial through our website. You may also be aware that in 2019 we conducted a pilot study of a yoga-based CR program for women, run in conjunction with Monash Health and supported through a NHF Vanguard Grant. The pilot program successfully demonstrated that female patients totally enjoyed the yoga-based CR program, and that those who attended showed an extremely high rate of program completion. The results of the program have been published this month in the European Journal of Cardiovascular Nursing – the article can be found at https://academic.oup.com/eurjcn/advance-article-abstract/doi/10.1093/eurjcn/zvab008/6179540</image:caption>

<image:title>Cardiac Connect Winter 2021 - Back on Track Project</image:title>
<image:caption>We are very pleased to let you know that the results of our Women’s Yoga CR Project have now been published. The Women’s CR Project involved piloting a women-only yoga-based cardiac rehabilitation (CR) program designed to enhance the appeal of CR to women. In this Australian-first program, women cardiac patients were offered the yoga-based exercise sessions, designed by our Accredited Yoga Instructor Ms Jenni Morrison-Jack, instead of the usual exercise-based sessions offered as part of traditional cardiac rehabilitation. Funded by a Vanguard Grant from the National Heart Foundation, the project was undertaken by the Centre in conjunction with cardiologists and the cardiac rehabilitation team at Monash Health. The Centre’s Research Nurse, Ms Kim Tucker, managed the day-to-day running of the study. The yoga CR program was designed to assist women in both their physical and emotional recovery. The program was extremely popular with women and resulted in enhanced completion of CR by those who participated. Women loved the sense of comfort and camaraderie through being in the women-only environment and gained a great deal both physically and mentally from the yoga sessions. Dr Barbara Murphy, the lead investigator on the project, presented results of the study at the Australian Cardiovascular Health and Rehabilitation Association (ACRA) conference, held online in August last year. She and her project team were awarded the Research Prize at the conference.</image:caption>

<image:title>Heart Health Connect Winter 2021 - Moving with Tai Chi</image:title>
<image:caption>Written by Ms Hema Navaratnam, ACHH Research Fellow Tai chi has been around for a long time and over the years has garnered significant interest from people all over the world. It is a form of gentle exercise that focuses on the breath, posture, imagery, body awareness and relaxation. This mind-body practice also referred to as “meditation in motion” has shown to boost both mood and quality of life including improving strength, function, flexibility and balance. Research has also shown benefits of tai chi in cardiac populations (Taylor-Piliae & Finley, 2020). This low impact and slow-motion exercise can be appealing for those needing to incorporate some daily exercise or even wanting to slowly return to some form of physical activity especially after a health event (Salmoirago-Blotcher et. al. 2017). The slow movements teach people to pay attention to their body and builds confidence.</image:caption>

<image:title>Heart Health Connect Spring 2021 - Fear of recurrence</image:title>
<image:caption>Written by Dr Dr Stephanie Mathews, ACHH Clinical Psychologist Almost everyone who has had a heart attack will, from time to time, experience thoughts and fear about having another one. While this is typical during recovery, for some people these thoughts and worries can become a persistent problem. For some people, the fear of another event creates extreme attention to bodily sensations, including a focus on pain, tightness in the chest, and other bodily feelings. This focused attention on the body is called ‘threat monitoring’. Threat monitoring refers to increased attention to signs of another possible heart attack, with the aim of preventing it occurring or seeking help quickly.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Written by Ms Hema Navaratnam, ACHH Research Fellow We all know that regular movement is important and so keeping it enjoyable is a good way of staying active. We’ve all attempted to dance, whether it was at our school dance event, a night out with friends or on a family occasion. The experience is generally fun and a good way of connecting with people, creating fond and perhaps long-lasting memories. For some of us, dancing can also be strongly linked to our sense of identity, our culture and community and a wonderful way of passing on tradition.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Would you be interested in participating in one of our current research studies undertaken by the Centre? If you have attended our Cardiac Counselling Clinic or have participated in any of the other services we offer through the Cardiac Wellbeing Program, you are most welcome to participate in the studies that we are currently undertaking. One of our current studies is called the Cardiac Distress Study. The Cardiac Distress Study aims to understand more about the range of emotions that cardiac event survivors experience during their recovery. To participate, all you need to do is answer a one-off online anonymous questionnaire, which takes about 15-20 minutes to do. You can find out more about the Cardiac Distress study and access the questionnaire by clicking here We hope that, with the information we gather through the Cardiac Distress Study, we can help cardiac patients in the future to adjust successfully after their heart event. The Cardiac Distress Study is part of our broader research program on Cardiac Emotions. We are partnering with Stanford University in the US, University of Suffolk in the UK, and Monash and Barwon Health in Victoria, making this an important international study.</image:caption>

<image:title>Heart Health Connect Summer 2021 - The Heart of Mindfulness</image:title>
<image:caption>Written by Ms Hema Navaratnam, ACHH Research Fellow At times we can be at the mercy of our thoughts with tendencies to worry or dwell about our loved ones or of the various events going on in our lives and, in recent times, the pandemic has likely been in the forefront of our minds. Mindfulness has been around for thousands of years having originated from Eastern religions and traditions. It is a skill that teaches us to pay attention to our present moment with a sense of curiosity, openness and without judgement. Whilst it can be challenging at first to put into practice, once implemented it can become a lifelong asset.</image:caption>

<image:title>Heart Health Connect Autumn 2022 - Healing from Cardiac Trauma</image:title>
<image:caption>Written by Dr Mirella Di Benedetto, Clinical Health Psychologist, Cardiac Counselling Clinic, ACHH. Having a heart attack or cardiac surgery can be a very traumatic event. Any event that is life threatening can evoke a traumatic response. The fight-flight response. This response to a cardiac event often involves the fight-flight-freeze response, a neurobiological response that is designed to protect us from harm. During this response the body physically prepares itself to fight off the threat or to run away from it.</image:caption>

For many, the scar is there to stay. This means that acceptance and compassion may be an important step on the road to recovery. Scarring following heart surgery may also affect a person’s self-esteem and confidence, and this can lead to behaviours such as avoidance of some activities (e.g., swimming) and other unhelpful coping mechanisms that can prolong anxiety.</image:caption>
