Health-related quality of life: development of disease-specific norms for Australian private health insurance members

The Medical Outcomes Study Short Form 12 (SF-12) is commonly used to assess health-related Quality of Life (HRQoL) in cardiac and other chronic disease patient groups. However, there are no established published Australian norms for the SF-12 in these disease groups. In order to address this, we conducted a study involving examining data from private health insurance members who participated in a telephonic disease management program for coronary heart disease, diabetes, COPD and heart failure. The database comprises almost 25,000 cases at baseline and over 4000 at follow-up. We are currently developing SF-12 disease specific norms for this population.
